Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens, reporter, journalist, editor and novelist, was born in Chatham in 1812 and transcended poverty and the imprisonment of his family for debt to become the 19th century's most famous and celebrated writer. His serial novels, comic, tragic and sentimental by turns, have been adapted countless times in the 20th and 21st centuries, adding to his global reputation. He died in 1870.
